hav a strong, broad and rounded head with a medium size
ears set well apart. They have a 'Roman' nose and full,
round cheeks. They also have a full chin, with the tip
in vertical line with the nose.
Body: The
body of a Birman is long and stock, with no appearance
of fragility. despite the long body, Birmans do not stand
high on their legs, which are medium in length, heavily
boned with large round paws,
Eyes: One
of several traits of the Birman is their large, almost
round eyes which are sapphire blue in colour. Traces of
other colours are undesirable.
Tail: Birmans
have a bushy tail which is medium in length and in proportion
to the body.
Coat: The
Birman has an off-white to cream appearance with a contrasting
colour on the mask, ears, legs and tail (known as points).
The colour is dense and clearly defined and all of te
same shade (except in kittens). On reaching maturity the
mask is complete. This colour can be:
- Seal Point - rich seal brown
- Blue Point - blue/grey
- Chocolate Point - milk chocolate
- Lilac Point - soft, pinkish grey
- Red Point - bright reddish gold
- Cream Point - medium buff cream
- Tabby Point - pale stripes through all the above
colours
- Tortoiseshell Point - combination of three colours
displayed on each point
Paws: The
white feet are characteristic of the Birman. The front
paws have pure white symmetrical 'gloves' ending in an
even line across the paw. The back paws also have white
'gauntlets' covering the back paws, extending up the back
of the leg (hock) to a spear head in the mid hock.
Temperament:
The Birman is a gentle-natured yet fun loving cat. They
are very affectionate and make devoted pets. Although
there may be many exceptions, a Birman would prefer to
be on your lap rather than our chasing birds. They are
an intelligent cat, and easily make their feelings known
to their companians.
